Mark Cavendish broke a long-standing Tour de France record Wednesday with his 35th stage win.

The 39-year-old sprint specialist dashed to the milestone victory in the fifth stage in Saint-Vulbas, France.

Five-time champion Eddy Merckx of Belgium established the record with 34 stage wins from 1969-75.

It was the first stage win since the 2021 Tour de France for Cavendish, who won his first in 2008.

Cavendish, an Isle of Man native known as the "Manx Missile," races for the Astana Qazaqstan Team.
